KUALA LUMPUR: Eight out of nine Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters arrested during illegal protests on Saturday were remanded yesterday.
One was released after questioning.
Magistrate Nazran Mohd Sham issued the remand orders at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate's court in Jalan Duta at about noon yesterday.
City police chief deputy comm Datuk Muhamad Sabtu Osman said those remanded are expected to be charged today under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both.
He said they would also be charged with participating in an illegal assembly with intention to cause chaos.
The Hindraf supporters had planned to walk with children holding roses to the Parliament building to hand over a memorandum on improving the lot of the Indian community.
