Blogger and opposition candidate Jeff Ooi did something he never could have done online. He slapped himself on the cheek. Twice.
On the soapbox at a Bukit Bendera ceramah last night, Ooi revealed that he had previously voted for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.
Stumping for a spirited crowd, the DAP candidate for the Jelutong parliamentary seat in Penang confessed his political transgressions and paid his penance gamely.
“Ten years ago (in 1999), I was so stupid! I voted Barisan Nasional - so stupid!” the blogger-cum-politician exclaimed, smacking himself on the cheek. “Cukup-lah!”
But he said he did not learn the lesson.
“In 2004, we got tired of (ex-premier Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) and we have new Mr Nice Guy, Mr Clean (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi). I voted for him as well.
And what have I got? I got VK Lingam… Another hit on my face!” Smack!
Ooi, who is DAP candidate, is contesting against Gerakan’s Dr Thor Teong Gee and Independent Badrul Zaman in a three-cornered fight in the March 8 general election.
Evasive Koh
Meanwhile, outgoing Penang chief minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon today refused to be drawn into a debate with Ooi over the state of Penang's economy.
Ooi yesterday asked Koh to substantiate his claim that Penang's economy was not declining.
“I do not want to comment on the rude statement and I would not like to engage in a debate with somebody who is rude,” Koh told a press conference this afternoon.
Koh was also quizzed on the allegations made by PKR yesterday that the state government offered contracts amounting to RM1 billion in exchange for a multinational corporation to reinvest RM350 million in the state.
The chief minister declined to answer, saying the questions were “vague”.
PKR Penang chief Zahrain Mohamed Hashim - who is contesting the Bayan Baru parliamentary seat - made the allegations yesterday, but without producing any evidence or name of the corporation in question.
Koh also remained evasive on his potential successor, in response to DAP's call to reveal the next chief minister.
“You think I should dance to the tune of DAP?” he said when questioned by a journalist.
“DAP has asked but have the voters been asking? We'll let you know if we think it's necessary to address the issue,” he said.
